The Rotary Club of Northumberland Sunrise celebrated generosity, community service and fellowship at its annual Foundation Night on October 1, 2026 when more than 40 Rotarians and guests gathered at Quantum for coffee, desserts and some very special recognition.

The evening was organized by the Rotary Club of Northumberland Sunrise Foundation Committee, with many club members pitching in to make the night a success. Desserts, coffee and other event needs were generously provided by members, helping ensure that funds raised could support The Rotary Foundation.

A highlight of the evening was the presentation of Paul Harris Fellow recognitions. While we often simply refer to them as “Paul Harris Awards,” the recognition can come about in two different ways.

Rotarians may become Paul Harris Fellows through their financial support of The Rotary Foundation. Rotary International recognizes individuals whose cumulative eligible contributions reach US$1,000 or more. A contribution can also be made in someone else's name, which allows Rotary clubs to recognize individuals for exceptional service to Rotary or their community.

This year, Paul Racine, Helen Walsh, Karen Trizzino and Denise O'Brien received Paul Harris recognition for their contributions to The Rotary Foundation. Their generosity helps Rotary support humanitarian projects, PolioPlus and Foundation grants in communities around the world.

The club also presented Paul Harris Fellow recognition to Matthew McCreadie and Past President Nizar Hassam in honour of their outstanding service.

Matthew has become a familiar and much-appreciated volunteer in our community. After coming to Canada from the UK, one of his first volunteer experiences was delivering Christmas hampers for the Salvation Army. Since then, he has supported Northumberland Sunrise Rotary events, shared his love of music and education with young people, raised funds for Rose Quest and, yes, has even been known to address a haggis or two!

Nizar was recognized for his leadership and dedication to the Rotary Club of Northumberland Sunrise, including his service as Club President in 2025–26. Kind, thoughtful, organized and always willing to help, Nizar has generously given his time and talents to the club and has been someone fellow members know they can count on.

The evening was also a wonderful opportunity for fellowship beyond our own club. We were pleased to welcome guests from the Trenton Rotary Club, including District Assistant Governor Jeremy Taft and their Rotary exchange student, adding to the spirit of friendship and connection that makes Rotary gatherings so special.

A very special thank you goes to the Foundation Committee and all the Northumberland Sunrise members who worked so hard to put the evening together, and to everyone who attended and helped make it such an enjoyable night.

Whether through giving, volunteering, leadership or simply showing up to support one another, Foundation Night was a great reminder of the many ways Rotarians put Service Above Self into action.
